Stone scored hat trick in Game 5 of Stanley Cup Final with fractured wrist

Vegas Golden Knights’ captain, Mark Stone, solidified his reputation as a true warrior when he revealed on the “Pat McAfee Show” that he played through Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final with a fractured wrist.

During the Cup-clinching match, Stone disclosed that he sustained a blow to his left wrist in the opening period. In order to continue playing, he had to undergo treatment “in between periods.”

In a remarkable display of resilience, despite the injury, Stone managed to score in each period of the Golden Knights’ resounding 9-3 victory over the Florida Panthers. Notably, he achieved a one-timer goal in the second period and an empty-net goal in the third, becoming the first player since Peter Forsberg in 1996 to secure a hat trick in a Stanley Cup Final.

Stone’s tenacity didn’t waver even during the euphoria of winning the Stanley Cup. He shared that he was focused on the trophy lift and was determined to mask any wrist discomfort during the celebratory moment, humorously remarking, “I made sure I wasn’t feeling much in the wrist during that celebration.”

Reflecting on his dedication to the championship, Stone emphasized the uncertainty of winning such a title again and underscored the importance of seizing the opportunity while it lasts.

Overcoming injuries wasn’t new to Stone, as he battled back issues over the past two seasons. His regular season in 2022-23 was cut short due to back troubles, leading to his second back surgery in February. However, he made a triumphant return for the playoffs, participating in all the games and contributing significantly with 11 goals and 24 points in 22 matches, averaging nearly 19 minutes on the ice per game.

Before the pivotal Game 5 against the Panthers, Stone conveyed his unwavering determination to do “whatever it took” to prepare himself for the postseason challenge.

Vegas is set to commence their 2023-24 campaign on October 10th against the Seattle Kraken.
