The Toronto Maple Leafs have inked a one-year contract with goaltender Martin Jones, valued at $875,000, as they fortify their goaltending depth.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have taken steps to reinforce their goaltending roster by reaching an agreement with seasoned player Martin Jones. The contract spans one year and carries a value of $875,000.

During the 2022-23 season, the 33-year-old goalie faced considerable challenges while playing for the Seattle Kraken. His record for the season stood at 27 wins, 13 losses, and 3 shutouts, but his performance was marred by a disappointing .886 save percentage. Notably, Jones has struggled to achieve a save percentage above .900 for quite some time now. His peak performance came back in the 2017-18 season with the San Jose Sharks, when he recorded a .915 save percentage. Unfortunately, he has been unable to replicate that level of play that initially earned him recognition.

Upon his arrival in Toronto, Jones will contend with prospect Joseph Woll for the backup goaltender position. Woll showcased exceptional skills during his brief appearances in the NHL last season.

Incorporating a seasoned option into the roster can prove advantageous, but considering the Maple Leafs’ tight financial position against the salary cap, it remains to be seen whether they can successfully navigate Jones through waivers after the training camp. Additionally, accommodating him on the active roster in case of necessity could pose a challenge.
