Indira Gandhi National Open University’s key role in India’s higher education and economic vision

VK Saxena, Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, highlighted the critical role of Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) in democratizing higher education and producing a skilled workforce to support India’s ambition to become the world’s third largest economy.

Addressing the ceremony marking the 38th foundation anniversary of IGNOU, Saxena lauded the institution for embodying the principles of inclusiveness enshrined in the National Education Policy 2020, for which it has been awarded the title of ‘People’s University’.

As the chief guest at the event, Saxena lauded the University of Illinois as a beacon of intellectual and academic excellence in the field of inclusive and distance education. He emphasized the university’s commitment to providing flexible, learner-centered, cost-effective and high-quality education while maintaining equity and accessibility.

Saxena recognized the importance of the National Education Policy 2020, emphasizing that it is transformative and aligned with the global agenda, particularly the United Nations 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.

Saxena urged the University of Illinois to explore emerging areas such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, robotics and virtual reality to meet global standards and emphasized the University’s potential to address educational challenges through innovative approaches.

He further advocated for a holistic approach to education, emphasizing the importance of improving student skills, vocational education, and a balanced focus on in-class and extracurricular activities for the development of the whole student.

In his address, Saxena emphasized the critical role of IGNOU in shaping India’s future by empowering individuals through accessible quality education to contribute to India’s economic growth and social progress.
