Canucks land Pius Suter on 2-year pact with $1.6M AAV

On Friday, the Vancouver Canucks made a significant move to strengthen their forward lineup by signing Pius Suter to a two-year contract, carrying an average annual value of $1.6 million. The team officially announced the signing.

In the previous season, Suter showcased his skills with the Detroit Red Wings, notching 14 goals and 10 assists over 79 games. He maintained an average ice time of 14:04 per game during his time with the team.

Having spent three years in the NHL, the 27-year-old Swiss player has experience playing both as a center and a wing. However, with the Canucks facing a shortage of depth at the center position, he is likely to take up the role of a center in Vancouver. This move will provide additional support after Elias Pettersson and J.T. Miller. The Canucks’ center options beyond them currently include Teddy Blueger and Nils Aman. Suter is anticipated to vie for the third-line center position.

Patrik Allvin, the Canucks’ general manager, expressed his thoughts on the acquisition, stating, “Bringing Pius on board for the next couple of years significantly bolsters our strength at center ice.” He further emphasized that adding a player who has achieved 43 goals over the past three seasons will considerably enhance the team’s offensive capabilities. Allvin also pointed out that Suter’s presence will positively impact the penalty-killing unit, an area where the Canucks struggled last season with the NHL’s lowest penalty kill rate of 71.6%.

Suter has demonstrated impressive defensive performance throughout his career, both during even-strength play and penalty kills. This attribute will be particularly valuable to the Canucks, as they aim to improve their penalty-killing effectiveness. Additionally, Suter’s versatility in playing both center and wing will provide Head Coach Rick Tocchet with increased flexibility when arranging forward line combinations.
