Calgary golf courses unexpectedly reopen in November

Maple Ridge Golf Course and Shaganappi Point Golf Course will be open until Nov. 19, offering 18-hole and nine-hole tournament tee times.

The decision to reopen the golf courses has received an overwhelming response from city officials and golfers. John Ferber, director of golf course operations for the City of Calgary, said the public response has been “very positive.”

“Golfing in Calgary in November. That’s unheard of,” Ferber said.” So we’re very excited about this opportunity.

The city has encountered some challenges in reopening the golf course, mainly due to staffing shortages after seasonal workers were laid off. However, Ferber said those who can will step up to help reopen the course.

Golfers will have to accept temporary greens as regular greens have been suspended for the winter. Ferber said the grass on the tees and fairways has gone dormant, so there is no need to worry about turf damage.

Despite the challenges, Ferber said he’s excited to play a few more rounds during the Calgary golf season.

“It’s great to play golf in the middle of November,” said Calgary golfer Kyle McNicol.” I’m excited to book a tee time and play nine holes.”

Faber said the experiment could lead to other opportunities if Calgary’s winter weather opens a window of opportunity throughout December. However, he warned that the decision will ultimately depend on the weather forecast.

“The weather forecast looks good. But, yes, we have to issue a clear …… warning that if the weather turns south we will not be open,” he said.

“It looks like winter is coming, maybe starting Sunday. But this is Alberta. The weather patterns here change every day. So maybe we can reach double-digit temperatures in December if we get the chance. We’ll be watching the weather forecast closely and staying on top of it.

Overall, the reopening of the Calgary Golf Course in mid-November was a pleasant surprise for golfers in this city. While the temporary greens may not be ideal, many golfers will certainly take advantage of the opportunity to play their last round of golf in November.
